Yaquina Bay opened to traffic; mariners should use caution during transit

13th Coast Guard District NewsNEWPORT, Ore. — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Sector Columbia River has opened the Yaquina Bar at 12 a.m., Sunday.

The COTP, working closely with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Operations Center Pacific, the Army Corps of Engineers Portland District and private contractors, continued to survey Yaquina Bay’s navigational channel, Saturday, as a result of the grounding and subsequent sinking of the fishing vessel Chevelle.

Attempts to locate the wreckage of the Chevelle have been unsuccessful, however the surveys of the navigational channel have been completed with results indicating the channel is clear of obstructions.

All mariners transiting the navigational channel are urged to use extreme caution, stay within the federal navigational channel, and report any additional findings concerning the un-located wreckage of the fishing vessel Chevelle to the U.S. Coast Guard.
