Work continues on Intracoastal Waterway near Galveston Causeway Bridge

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard and Traylor Brother’s Construction Company are working to remove the submerged object that caused the Intracoastal Waterway to be closed Monday.

Coast Guard crews are monitoring the Traylor Brother’s Construction Company’s salvage ship as it works to remove the submerged object near the Galveston Causeway Bridge. The ICW remains closed to all boat traffic for more than one mile surrounding the bridge.

The captain of the tug and barge Bullcalf reported that it had struck a submerged object and was taking on water Monday at 9:35 a.m. The Bullcalf’s onboard pumps were able to prevent the water from swamping the tug, which made its way to the Southwest Shipyard near San Jacinto, Texas.

Coast Guard Station Galveston sent a boat crew to the causeway bridge area, to locate and identify any submerged objects. At 12:15 p.m. the Captain of the Port closed off the area in the ICW surrounding the Causeway Bridge to prevent further accidents.
