Woman Rescued From Ice Floe

ERIE, Pa. — Coast Guard Station Erie crewmembers assisted a 41-year-old woman and Ohio native from an ice floe approximately 200 yards offshore near Erie at approximately 1:00 p.m.

Station Erie’s crew launched its 25-foot response boat and was able to reach the detached piece of ice and transfer the woman to shore.

Elizabeth Alvarado, was on top of the ice floe and was able to use a cell phone to call 9-1-1, the call was then transferred to Station Erie.

Because of the warmer temperatures the ice is melting and can become more dangerous. The Coast Guard urges people who may recreate on or near the ice to use proper protective equipment.
