Washington Island Woman Medevaced by Coast Guard

WASHINGTON ISLAND, Wis. — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 35-year-old pregnant woman from Washington Island because she was in active labor at approximately 2:00 a.m. today.

A Coast Guard Station Washington Island 30-foot response boat was launched to assist the woman.

“She was early with her due date and the ferries don’t run through the night, they called the Coast Guard because she knew she was going into labor,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Robert Gress, a boatswain’s mate at Station Washington Island.

The crew then transported the pregnant woman to awaiting Emergency Medical Services on the mainland ferry dock at Northport to be taken to a local hospital.
