Vessel Remains aground in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Key West, Fla. – The 49-foot pleasure craft vessel LISERN II remains aground Tuesday on Grecian Rocks in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The Coast Guard and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) are working to mitigate any possible environmental impacts to the reefs.

Coast Guard Sector Key West, FKNMS, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Monroe County continue to monitor the situation. Crewmembers are working with the oil spill response contractor to develop a plan to remove the oil from the vessel once weather conditions improve.

The Coast Guard has opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to respond to this incident.

Response efforts are on hold until weather conditions improve later in the week. Aircraft and vessels from FWC and the Coast Guard Auxiliary continue to monitor the vessel. No movement or oil sheen were observed from the vessel today.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
