Upper Mississippi River Closed Due to Salvage of Sunken Barge

PADUCAH, Ky. – Salvage crews have arrived on scene to begin recovery efforts of the barge, which sank May 24, 2007, promoting the Captain of the port Ohio Valley to close of a portion of the Upper Mississippi River from mile marker 82 to mile marker 83.5.

The Coast Guard was notified, at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007, the vessel Riley Elizabeth, owned by Marquette Transportation Company Inc., reported striking bottom or an unknown object, resulting in one grain barge sinking within the navigable channel, in the vicinity of mile 83 on the Upper Mississippi River, near Grand Tower, Ill.. The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. (CDT) while the towing vessel was pushing 25 loaded grain barges southbound.

Once the sunken barge is removed from the navigable channel, the Captain of the Port will reopen the river to vessel traffic.
