Update: Coast Guard reopens Intracoastal Waterway

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard has reopened the Intracoastal Waterway near the Galveston, Texas, Causeway Bridge after removing the submerged object that caused the ICW to be closed Monday.

Traylor Brother’s Construction Company removed pieces of old bridge fenders, including large pieces of wood and concrete, from the area where the tug and barge Bullcalf struck a submerged object Monday. A sonar sweep by the Army Corps of Engineers found the area to be safe for travel.

The closure of the ICW had caused a delay in barge traffic affecting a few facilities, and more than 15 barges.
