Two Boats Collide Near Cockenoe Island in Long Island Sound, N.Y.

NEW YORK – A 21-foot vessel with one person on board and a 24-foot vessel with three people on board collided resulting in reported minor injuries near Cockenoe Island, N.Y. in the Long Island Sound at 7:20 a.m. today.

Rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck responded immediately to a distress call made from one of the vessels involved in the collision. A rescue crew from the Westport Marine Fire Department also responded and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection is conducting the investigation.

Fog in the area created low visibility, approximately less than 100 feet.

It is unknown whether any of the boaters were wearing lifejackets.

Both vessels sustained damages.

“The Coast Guard reminds mariners that in low visibility conditions signaling devices, such as lights and horns, and maintaining safe speeds are an integral safety precaution and can prevent incidents such as these,” Said Petty Officer 1st Class Jesse Jordan, watch stander at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.
