Tow Boat Crew to be awarded for saving crewmembers life

ST. LOUIS – An award ceremony will be held for three crewmembers from the towboat Elizabeth Brown for rescuing a fellow crewmember who fell overboard in January 2007.

The Coast Guard will present a Coast Guard Certificate of Valor to the vessel Captain, Mr. David Keene of Alton, Ill., and Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Awards to the two deckhands, Mr. Randy Boykin of St. Louis and Mr. Shane Ducote of St. Louis for their heroic efforts.

The award ceremony will be held on April 23, 2008, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Blue Heron Restaurant in Granite City, Ill. at the Tri-City Port District, 100 Niedringhaus Ave.

The crewmembers are credited with saving the life of another deckhand who fell off a barge near the Ameren UE Rush Island Plant on the Mississippi River. When the deckhand fell overboard, the Captain positioned his towboat to use the propeller wash to help push the deckhand from under the barges. After getting the deckhand onboard, the Captain with the aid of the deckhands, administered CPR to the deckhand reviving him.

The towboat and crew members are from Lewis and Clark Marine, headquartered in Granite City, Ill.
