- 1999- Coast Guard helicopters from AIRSTA Barbers Point rescued balloonists Richard Branson, a British billionaire and founder of Virgin Records and Airlines, American millionaire Steve Fossett, and Per Lindstrand when bad weather forced them to ditch their balloon off Hawaii during their attempt to be the first balloonists to circle the globe.
