Three children rescued from cliff near Lincoln City, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard and Lincoln City Fire Department rescued three 11-year-old boys from a 120-foot cliff at Road’s End State Park north of Lincoln City, Ore., Monday.

Coast Guard Air Station North Bend was notified of the trapped children by the Lincoln City Fire Department at approximately 9 p.m.and dispatched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., after ground crews were initially unable to rescue them. One member of the Lincoln City Fire/Rescue team managed to reach the boys, but could not safely take them from the cliff.

The firefighter stayed with the children until the helicopter crew could retrieve and deliver two of the boys to emergency crews on the nearby beach. He then managed to carry the last child down with the aid of other rescue team members after the hoist equipment aboard the helicopter malfunctioned.

None of the boys or rescuers were injured during the incident.
