Removal of aids to navigation in Virginia Inside Passage to continue
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is overseeing the removal of 56 aids to navigation in the Virginia Inside Passage on Virginia’s Eastern Shore from June to August.
A contractor is removing previously identified dayboards in waterways from Gargathy Inlet to north of Great Machipongo Inlet after shoaling in these areas created a significant hazard to navigation.

Coast Guard to discontinue 166 navigational aids in Virginia Inside Passage
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is scheduled to discontinue 166 navigational aids within the Virginia Inside Passage (VIP) due to shoaling and other navigational safety concerns throughout the area.
Fixed aids to navigation will be removed as Coast Guard resources permit over the next several years and will be listed under an Advance Notice in future Local Notice to Mariners.

Coast Guard seeks public comment for disestablishment of Virginia Inside Passage
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is seeking public comment on the proposal to disestablish the navigational aids along the Virginia Inside Passage inside of Metompkin Bay near Chincoteague during the next two months.
The proposed disestablishment is due to encroaching shoaling conditions, limited surveys and a lack of funds to dredge the passage.
