Coast Guard concludes ice breaking operations on lower Great Lakes

DETROIT — The Coast Guard concluded icebreaking operations on the lower Great Lakes, Monday, more than four months after it started, Dec. 15, 2013.
Operation Coal Shovel is a bi-national domestic icebreaking effort covering the St. Lawrence Seaway, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Detroit/St. Clair River System, and southern Lake Huron.

Coast Guard concludes ice-breaking season in western Great Lakes
CLEVELAND — The 9th Coast Guard District concluded Operation Taconite, its ice-breaking operation in the western Great Lakes, Friday, officially bringing the 2011-12 icebreaking season to a close.
Under control of Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Operation Taconite is carried out in Lake Superior, the St. Mary’s River, the Straits of Mackinac, and northern Lake Huron.
