Substances found off Carolina beaches not oil

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard has announced that the unknown substance in the water discovered by boaters in several locations off the North Carolina coast Wednesday has been identified Thursday as trichodesmium by the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

According to Coast Guard officials the bloom is a non-toxic cyanobacteria that is not harmful to humans.

The substance was found on several beaches and was reported as far north as Onslow Beach, N.C. and as far south as Charleston, S.C.

The Coast Guard urges anyone who suspects or sees pollution on a beach to call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.
