Station South Padre Island to host open house for National Safe Boating Week

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Coast Guard Station South Padre Island will host an open house to celebrate National Safe Boating Week on South Padre Island Saturday, May 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The public is invited to explore a variety of Coast Guard missions and witness a simulated aerial rescue by a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi.

A helicopter crew will also be giving tours of an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter and answering questions about helicopter operations. Tours will be given of Station South Padre Island and Coast Guard Cutter Amberjack, an 87-foot protector class cutter.

Other events at the open house include:

  • Boating safety discussions with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and crews from Station South Padre Island.
  • Free vessel inspections dock side and vessels on trailers by the Coast Guard Auxiliary
  • A static display and demonstrations by Coast Guard South Padre Island Aids to Navigation crew members.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel will be present to answer questions and will have a boat available for display.
  • Representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Air & Marine will be on hand with a vessel for tours and questions.
  • Station South Padre Island will be giving away whistles from Whistles for Life.
  • Activities and face painting for children and adults will be available.
  • A concession stand will be available.
