NEW YORK — A crew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescued four people aboard a sailing vessel southwest of the Fire Island Inlet, New York, Sunday.
At approximately 8:15 a.m., watchstanders at Station Fire Island received a phone call from a commercial salvage company stating that a 38-foot sailing vessel was beset by weather 2 miles from shore, and that they were unable to respond.
The salvage company also informed the watchstanders that the vessel’s engine was overheating and their anchor was not holding. There were 2 adults and 2 children aboard the vessel. The children were beginning to suffer from severe seasickness.
Station Fire Island notified Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound to inform them they were launching to assist in the situation.
The smallboat crew aboard a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat arrived on scene and put the vessel into a stern tow. The crew safely moored the vessel at Robert Mosses Boat Basin.
The Coast Guard recommends having a marine band radio and to keep an eye on the weather when heading out to sea. Weather can change in an instant, and every mariner should be prepared for changing conditions.
