Shrimp boat runs aground on Sapelo Island, Ga., 2 fishermen rescued

7th Coast Guard District NewsCHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard rescued two men Sunday after their fishing boat ran aground at Sapelo Island, Ga.

Search and rescue watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified of a maritime distress, Sunday at 4:30 a.m., by the operator of the 49-foot fishing vessel L&M. It was reported that the vessel had run aground after having been at anchor earlier in the morning.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Brunswick, Ga., and an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Ga., were launched to investigate. The helicopter rescue crew located the fishing vessel aground and laying on its starboard side. The helicopter crew performed a hoist at approximately 5:45 a.m. and transported the fishermen to St. Simon’s Island Airport.

There are no reports of pollution and the owner of the L&M is coordinating with commercial salvage companies to remove the vessel.
