BOSTON, MA – A Coast Guard Station Castle Hill boat crew medievaced a mariner suffering from a cardiac condition yesterday.
The 304 foot freight ship AS Africa’s 43-year-old vessel master was transported from his freight ship after requesting assistance.
The Coast Guard received a call at 7:30 a.m. from the Antigua and Barbuda flagged ship 10 miles southeast of Newport, R.I., stating that the vessel’s master was ill and needed medical attention.
The master was taken off the AS Africa at 9:25 a.m., by a 41 foot boat dispatched from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill, R.I. At the time of the medivac, the seas were reported to be 2 to 4 feet, winds were 5 to 10 knots.
The man was brought ashore in Newport at 9:54 a.m., where an awaiting ambulance transported him to Newport Hospital.
