Ships Engineers Indicted for Hiding Oil Discharges

SAN FRANCISCO – Two engineers on the M/T Captain X Kyriakou have been indicted by a federal grand jury for falsifying the ship’s log to cover up illegal discharges of sludge and waste oil into the ocean.

When the Coast Guard inspected the ship last month, they discovered a pipe that was used to bypass the ship’s pollution control equipment and allow the ship’s sludge and bilge water to be sent directly overboard.

The investigation began when a crew member on the tanker called the Coast Guard National Response Center and told them that on several occasions he was ordered to discharge oil over the side.

The two are facing up to 10 years in prison for their actions.
