BOSTON – A Coast Guard helicopter crew airlifted a man with a severely injured hand who was aboard an 80-foot fishing vessel roughly 80 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard about 4 p.m. today.
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England was notified about 1:36 p.m. that a crewman aboard the fishing vessel Courtney Elizabeth, homeported in Point Judith, R.I., was handling lobster pots when he suffered significant trauma to his right hand.
Sector Southeastern New England coordinated with a Coast Guard flight surgeon who recommended the crewman be airlifted for medical treatment.
An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched from Air Station Cape Cod about 3:12 p.m. and hoisted the injured man about 4 p.m. He was safely transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence about 4:45 p.m.
