Sector Ohio Valley to hold change of command ceremony

Louisville, KY – Capt. Larry W. Hewett, will relieve Capt. Hung M. Nguyen as Commander of Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley during a change of command ceremony on Tuesday June 15 at the Muhammad Ali Center at 144 North 6th Street in Louisville.

Capt. Hewett arrives in Louisville from the United States Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he served as the Maritime Exercise Branch Chief.

Capt. Nguyen has been the commander of Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley since 2007 and will depart Louisville to become the Chief of Prevention at the Fourteenth Coast Guard District in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry, Commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans is scheduled to be the presiding official for the ceremony.

The Coast Guard traces its roots in Louisville back to 1852 with the assignment of the first local Supervisory Inspector of the U.S. Steamboat Inspection Service. Today the operational missions of the Sector are waterways management, maritime homeland security, marine environmental protection, commercial vessel inspection, recreational boating safety, and marine casualty investigation. Over 465 active duty and reserve personnel are assigned to the sector that has an area of responsibility that spans nearly 8,300 miles of navigable waterways and its tributaries in ten states with a total of 17 subunits, some of which are located in Pittsburgh, Pa., Huntington, W. Va., Cincinnati, Ohio, Paducah, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn.
