Sector New York wins annual Martin Luther King Jr. B-Ball Tourney

YORKTOWN, Va. - The Sector New York basketball team placed 1st in the Coast Guards 33rd Annual Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Basketball Tournament. The tournament was held January 18-22 and had 12 teams from around the country competing. YORKTOWN, Va. – Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown hosted the 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament, January 18-22.

The winning team was Sector New York, followed by Alameda Thunder in second place and BSU Portsmouth in third place. Other participants included the Coast Guard 7th District, Aviation Training Center Mobile, Sector Mobile, Surface Forces Logistics Center Baltimore, Sector North Carolina, Sector St. Petersburg, Station Oak Island, and TRACEN Yorktown. Lt. Joshua Buck was award MVP.

“The competition was strong and the camaraderie amongst the players was exceptional,” said Katherine Long, the training center’s Morale, Well-Being, and Recreation Sports Director.

Afterward, a players social was held at Quaker Steak and Lube Restaurant where the players were treated to an all-you-can eat dinner while they reflected on the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. and reminisced about the current and past tournaments.
