Sector Field Office Grand Haven Change of Command

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Lt. Cmdr. Robert Hemp will relieve Lt. Cmdr. Steve Lowe of command of Sector Field Office Grand Haven in a change of command ceremony Friday, July 11, 2008 at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will be held here at Escanaba Memorial Park.

Lowe assumed command of Sector Field Office Grand Haven in August 2006. As Commanding Officer, Lowe was in charge of more than 40 active duty, reserve duty and Auxiliary men and women. He is transferring to attend the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.

Hemp is coming from Maintenance and Logistics Command in Boston, Mass. His responsibilities included scheduled and emergency response support to Coast Guard units throughout for the 1st District area of responsibility. Prior to that assignment, he was enrolled in the advanced education program attending the University of Massachusetts’s at Lowell.

Hemp is a native of Sidney, Ohio, and was commissioned in 1995 at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct. He earned a Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Massachusetts’s at Lowell. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science from the Coast Guard Academy.

Capt. Bruce Jones, Commander of Sector Lake Michigan is scheduled to preside over the ceremony.

The change of command is a time-honored tradition and deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. The event signifies a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability for the command. The ceremony is witnessed by all members so that they all know exactly when the transfer of leadership takes place.
