Sector Boston holds change of command ceremony

BOSTON – Coast Guard Sector Boston held a change of command ceremony at its base in the North End Friday to welcome its new commanding officer.

Capt. John N. Healey assumed responsibility as commanding officer of Sector Boston from Capt. Gail Kulisch, in a time-honored ceremony that formally transfers authority and accountability from one individual to another.

Healey was previously the deputy commander of Coast Guard Sector New York and alternate captain of the Port of New York since June 2008. While he was there, he also served as the alternate federal maritime security coordinator, alternate federal on-scene coordinator, acting officer in charge of marine inspection, and alternate search and rescue mission coordinator.

The ceremony is designed to strengthen the respect for the continuity of command, which is vital to any military organization. The culmination of the ceremony is reached when both officers read their orders, face one another, salute, and transfer responsibility of the command. This provides the entire command an opportunity to witness this transfer of responsibility and know that the officer directed to take command is doing so under the proper authority.
