Searchers locate kayaks belonging to missing sailors

LOS ANGELES – Searchers have found two kayaks drifting 35 miles south-east of San Nicolas Island off the coast of Southern California.  The kayaks, found around 6 p.m., were tied together and matched the description of the ones that two missing Navy personnel were in when they were last seen yesterday.

The Navy’s USS Momsen has recovered the Kayaks and, together with a helicopter, will continue to search through the night. Because of the wind direction and the fact that the Kayaks would tend to drift farther on top of the water, searchers will continue the search between the recovery point and the island.

A Navy P-3 aircraft from Woodby Island, Wash. is scheduled to be on scene and assist in the search at around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
