Search underway for missing boater near Oyster Bay Harbor, N.Y.

NEW YORK– A multi-agency search is underway for an overdue boater in an eight-foot aluminum dinghy in Oyster Bay Harbor, N.Y., today.

The wife of the missing boater reported that he departed Roosevelt Park at 4:30 p.m. to check on his vessel which was attached to a mooring ball about 100 yards from the shore.

The boater’s vehicle is still parked at the Roosevelt Park Marina and unattended and his dinghy is missing.

Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck and Nassau County Police Department were dispatched to commence a search. In addition to water and shoreline searches, a Coast Guard rescue helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and an air unit from Nassau County PD are participating in the search efforts. The Oyster Bay Harbormaster also responded, and the local police department is checking local establishments.

“With a search encompassing all of Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor, we hope to find this mariner alive and safe,” said Pete Winters, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound search and rescue controller. “We will continue to search throughout the night and are making preparations for daylight searches.”

Weather on scene is reported at six-knot winds and calm seas.
