Search Suspended for Missing Teen at Rockaway Beach

NEW YORK-The search has been suspended for a 16-year-old female swimmer at Rockaway Beach around 8 p.m. today.

“The Coast Guard and various agencies diligently searched for the girl, but were unable to locate her,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Brian McClung, a Coast Guard Sector New York watchstander. “We searched for approximately 15 hours and had a Coast Guard cutter on scene throughout the night. Our search, unfortunately, yielded no results.”

Two girls were reportedly in distress Friday afternoon, prompting a call to the New York Police Department around 3:50 p.m. One girl was recovered from the water by a police asset and is listed in stable condition.

The Coast Guard urges the public to avoid areas of water known for rip tides and use lifejackets while in the water, as they greatly improve chances of survival.
