Search suspended for missing diver near Tacoma

SEATTLE – The search for a missing diver near Tacoma, Wash., by the Coast Guard and Tacoma Fire Department today has been suspended.

The effort was called off after the Coast Guard, Tacoma Fire Department and several Good Samaritans including the vessels Deep Inside and Ocean Quest saturated more than 40 square miles of water near Tacoma for approximately three hours without turning up any signs of the missing man.

The Tacoma Fire Department notified Coast Guard Sector Seattle at 2:20 p.m. they were searching for a diver who went missing approximately 100 yds. off the shore between downtown Tacoma and Point Defiance. The original report was made by two divers who told the Tacoma Fire Department they had seen what appeared to be a another diver struggling in the water. The two swam to assist but found no trace of the man.

A 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched from Coast Guard Station Seattle to assist in the search.

The diver is reported to be a male wearing a black wetsuit.

Weather forecasts for the area predicted 15-25 knot winds and 2-4 foot seas.
