CLEVELAND — The two men reported missing on Lake Erie yesterday, were found today, at approximately 10:15 a.m.
The Good Samaritan vessel Blue Sky located Gregory DeWirth and Nick Stokle in a small boat nine miles north of Fairport Harbor, Ohio.
Blue Sky contacted the U.S. Coast Guard after hearing an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, from the Ninth Coast Guard District Command Center, on their marine band radio.
“This case shows the importance of having a marine band radio on board your vessel,” said Chief Petty Officer Robert K. Lanier, Ninth Coast Guard District Asst. Public Affairs Officers. “We recommend all mariners have a marine band radio and contact the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF channel 16 if they are in distress.”
The two men were taken to Coast Guard Station Fairport, transferred to Emergency Medical Services and were then taken to Lake East Hospital near Painsville, Ohio.
