Search for Missing Mariners in Alaska Suspended

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard has suspended the search today for two mariners reported missing February 22th.

Mike Dunne and Vern McGee were reported to have been transiting from Juneau to Ketchikan aboard the vessel Transition when the Coast Guard was notified. A door confirmed to be from the Transition was located Wednesday in Frederick Sound on Kupreanof Island.

The Coast Guard Cutters Maple and Anacapa, H-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, small boats from Coast Guard Stations Juneau and Petersburg and the Civil Air Patrol searched 6700 square miles of water and shoreline over the past 6 days.

“Regretfully this is a tragedy,” said Commander Micheal Trimpert, acting Chief of Response Division, 17th Coast Guard District, “our hearts go out to the families.”
