Search for missing diver continues

 LOS ANGELES – The Coast Guard has identified the diver who went missing this morning as Mr. Stewart Hindley, age 54, of Glen Ellen, Calif.  Mr. Hindley went missing while participating in a recreational dive off of the southeastern side of Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park.

The Coast Guard command center in Los Angeles received the initial report at 9:49 a.m. from the Santa Barbara based dive vessel Vision. Two rescue boats were immediately dispatched from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor along with one rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles.

Both surface and underwater searches are ongoing, encompassing a 21-square-nautical-mile area. Los Angeles County Lifeguard rescue divers are conducting the underwater search, while the Coast Guard and National Park Service are searching on the surface.

Search-and-rescue operations will continue through the night. Mr. Hindley’s family has been notified.
