Search ends for 2 fishermen near Fairfield, Conn. after bodies found by divers

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard has called off its search for two missing fisherman, after two bodies matching their description were located in the vicinity of Penfield Reef, Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Fairfield Marine divers located the bodies of the two individuals.

Around 7:45 a.m., Saturday morning, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center were notified by the Fairfield Police Department that six people fishing near Penfield Reef were swept out to sea.

Three of the individuals were able to make it to shore on their own and a Fairfield Marine Unit rescued the fourth person. However, the two others could not be located.

The command center issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and launched a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium.
