Search Continues for Missing Hampton Kayaker

HAMPTON, Va. – Coast Guard rescue crews continue searching for a missing kayaker near the Mellen Street Bridge Thursday morning.

Phuoc Tran, 65, of Hampton, was reportedly fishing late Wednesday afternoon when his kayak capsized.

Eyewitnesses on scene reported he submerged and did not resurface.

A helicopter rescue crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., a 25-foot rescue boat crew from Station Portsmouth, and search crews from the Hampton Police Department, Hampton Fire and Emergency, and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission participated in the search for the man Wednesday night.

The Coast Guard rescue boat crews remained on scene searching last night.

The search continues with assistance from Coast Guard Auxiliary, Hampton Fire and Rescue, Virginia Beach Police Department, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries this morning.

“It doesn’t matter how good a swimmer you are, you should always wear a life jacket,” said Lt. Raymond McKay, command duty officer at Sector Hampton Roads. “A life jacket will help you stay afloat and also stay visible in the water. Also, check the weather and be familiar with your equipment and your surroundings.”
