Safety zone minimized around derailed train

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard minimized the safety zone around the derailed train in the Chesapeake, Virginia area Friday afternoon.

A waterway safety zone from the Great Bridge Locks to the Centerville Parkway will now be enforced by the Coast Guard, rather than extending to the Albermarle entrance of the ICW, following a derailment of a Chesapeake and Albermarle Railroad Company train at 5 a.m., Friday morning.

The derailment of the train caused 1,700 gallons of diesel to spill in the waterway of the A&C Canal Bridge. The Coast Guard along with local response agencies and HEPACO are currently on-scene conducting and overseeing clean up operations.
