CLEVELAND — The 9th Coast Guard District announces Monday important safety information for mariners transiting near U.S. Naval vessels visiting the Great Lakes as part of official War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration events.
Crews aboard the USS De Wert and the USS Hurricane are scheduled to transit the Great Lakes July through September, making port calls and participating in bicentennial commemoration events in U.S. and Canadian ports.
Mariners are restricted from approaching within 100 yards of any U.S. Naval vessel and. When within 500 yards, mariners must operate at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course.
Violations of a naval vessel protection zone are a felony and are punishable by up to six years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines.
