Response to report of fuel oil in Mobile Ship Channel continues

Coast Guard 8th District NewsMOBILE, Ala. — The unified command for the Mobile Ship Channel oil spill is continuing its joint response, Sunday, to the release of fuel oil at the Gulf Coast Asphalt, LLC., facility.

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Mobile, Capt. Don Rose, has reduced the temporary safety zone for the Mobile River to all waters between Three Mile Creek and the south end of the Mobile Convention Center. This safety zone is needed to protect vessels and persons from potential safety hazards associated with the oil spill. All vessels must use a safe minimum speed and minimal wake when entering or transiting through the zone. Vessels must comply with all orders of the Coast Guard on scene patrol vessels. All concerned traffic may contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Ch. 16 or at 251-441-5976.

Gulf Coast Asphalt has been working in conjunction with Oil Spill Response Organizations to contain the spill. Clean-up crews have recovered approximately 62,655 gallons of oil-water mixture.

“Getting vessels moving through the channel safely is a priority,” said Rose. “We have been able to reduce the size of the safety zone and most vessels transiting the area are now moving without having to obtain permission.”

Due to inclement weather passing through the area, clean-up crews have suspended operations for the day.

Approximately 21,900 feet of containment boom has been deployed, as well as 6 drum skimmers and 12 vacuum trucks to assist in clean-up efforts.

There are no reports of oiled wildlife.
