ALAMEDA, Calif. — After saturating the Oakland estuary searching for a man who reportedly jumped into the water today, search crews from the Coast Guard, Alameda County Fire Department Marine Unit, Oakland Fire and Police Department and Alameda Fire and Police Departments stood down at 2:30 p.m. when no one was found.
A passing motorist crossing the Fruitvale Bridge took note of a man with a leg over the rail at about 9:30 a.m. today. When he returned to the bridge a few minutes later, he called 911 when he did not see the man. Within 30 minutes of notification, a Coast Guard helicopter surveilled the area between the Fruitvale and High Street bridges.
Rescue boats from the Coast Guard, Alameda FD, as well as divers from the Alameda County Sheriffs Department and swimmers from Alameda FD joined the search. Three ambulances and three fire engines were on standby at the scene.
Toward the final hour of the response, responders evaluated search efforts and found no missing persons report, no signs of distress and have re-verified the reporting source of information. The active search is suspended pending further developments.
