Rescue crews trek north to assist Grand Forks residents

FARGO, N.D. – – Crews from the Coast Guard, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Customs and Border Protection are moving some rescue assets from Fargo to Grand Forks today, April 01, 2009, as part of the Red River flood response operation.

The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s office has requested assistance due to continued rising floodwaters. Upon completing the 79-mile journey, the crews will assist with search and rescue operations and help residents who may still be stranded in their Grand Forks homes.

The caravan will consist of two Coast Guard airboats, two U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service airboats and two CBP all-terrain vehicles.

During the joint flood response operation, 129 individuals and numerous pets and animals were rescued.
