Rescue Crews Searching For Missing Person in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Rescue crews are searching for a person who went over the side of the Main Street Bridge here at 9:42 p.m.

The bridge operator of the Main Street Bridge near The Landing saw the person go over the side of the bridge and contacted 911 and hailed the Coast Guard on VHF marine radio channel 16.

The Coast Guard launched a rescue boat from Station Mayport, Fla., a rescue helicopter from Air Station Savannah, Ga., and the Cutter Kingfisher from Mayport to search for the person. Jacksonville Fire-Rescue and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office both have vessels searching the river. A water taxi that operates in Downtown Jacksonville is also assisting in the search.

Firefighters from Jacksonville Fire-Rescue and crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Kingfisher both located some personal belongs in the water near the bridge. It’s not clear whether these are the property of the missing person.

It’s unclear to rescue crews and coordinators at this time exactly how the person went over the side of the bridge.

The water temperature where the person went into water is in the mid-60s.
