Rescue crews recover body of 17-year-old swimmer at Fort Macon State Park

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and local agencies ended the search for a missing 17-year-old swimmer after the body was recovered at Fort Macon State Park today.

The Coast Guard was notified at 2 p.m. by the Atlantic Beach Police Department that the 17-year-old male’s body was recovered on the beach.

The Atlantic Beach Police and Fire Departments and the Coast Guard set up an incident command post Sunday to organize search efforts.

Helicopter rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon, N.C., local police and fire rescue personnel and a helicopter crew from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., searched the area throughout last night and today.

“We are all saddened that the search efforts of the Coast Guard, fire department, police, and marines came to this tragic end,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Jeffrey Dixon. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
