BOSTON — Coast Guard rescue crews evacuated passengers from a ferry that ran aground on Nixes Mate, in Boston’s outer harbor Aug. 25, 2012.
Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Boston received notification via VFH channel 16 at approximately 8:50 a.m. that the ferry Provincetown 3 had run aground with 145 passengers, four crew and one dog on board.
Coast Guard Station Boston launched two 45-foot response boat medium’s. Coast Guard Station Point Allerton launched a 25-foot response boat small. The Coast Guard Cutter Flyingfish was diverted. Quincy Police Department, Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, Weymouth Harbor Master, Massachusetts State Police, Sea Tow Boston, City Water Taxi, and the Ferry Provincetown 2 were also on scene assisting.
Station Boston’s two 45-foot response boat medium’s, Quincy Police department boats, and Boston Police Department boats tranferred the passengers.
All passengers were safely evacuted onto the Provincetown 2 at approximately 10:35 a.m.
Coast Guard Marine Inspectors are conducting an investigation and inspection of the vessel.
The Provincetown 3 is scheduled to re-float at the next high tide at about 6:30 p.m.
“The coordinated response effort went smoothly,” said Lt. Garrett R. Meyer, the command duty officer at Sector Boston. “The response shows the professionalism and skill of our local responders.”
