Portland ferry runs aground near Casco Bay

PORTLAND, Maine- A Portland-based ferry ran aground about half a mile southeast of Basket Island, off the coast of Maine around 10 p.m., Friday.

There are no reports of pollution or injuries to the 99 passengers and crew aboard.

Coast Guard Station South Portland received a radio call at 9:58 p.m., reporting the 84-foot Bay Mist had run aground. The station launched a 25-foot and a 47-foot rescue boat to help evacuate the passengers from the stranded vessel.

The Coast Guard and several local agencies are working to transfer the people aboard the Bay Mist to the Island Romance, another Casco Bay ferry that is on scene to assist.

Currently seas are four feet with winds around 15 miles per hour.

“We appreciate the quick response from our local partners that are helping us evacuate the passengers from the ferry as safely as possible,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Wesley Williams, a situation unit controller working the case at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England.
