Portland Coast Guard Auxiliary celebrates 68th anniversary

PORTLAND, Ore. – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will celebrate 68 years of service to the nation at Coast Guard Sector Portland at 6767 N. Basin Avenue here June 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Coast Guard Auxiliary Divisions Six and Seven will host this celebration that is open to the public.

Planned events include demonstrations of emergency communications, a helicopter rescue, and a remote underwater vehicle as well as lifejacket safety tips and a recreational boating vessel exam.

For 68 years, tens-of-thousands of men and women of the Coast Guard Auxiliary have spent millions of volunteer hours helping the Coast Guard carry out its missions. Auxiliarists are probably best known for educating the public through their boating safety classes and vessel safety checks.

The Auxiliary assists the active duty and reserve Coast Guard in search and rescue missions, environmental protection and marine events. The Auxiliary also often performs safety patrols in conjunction with regular Coast Guard units.
