Overdue Morro Bay fishing boat “Wild Thing” Located

Morro Bay, Calif. – Video of the 30-foot fishing boat “Wild Thing” was captured Saturday by a Sacramento based Coast Guard C-130 airplane. The boat was located Saturday morning after using information provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

It was found about 160 nautical miles west-southwest of Point Conception, Calif. Repeated attempts to contact the boat by radio went unanswered. It remains underway, moving at about five nautical miles per hour. The Santa Barbara based Coast Guard cutter Blackfin is heading toward its present location, about 240 nautical miles southwest of Point Conception.

The boat’s captain, Joe Jones, has not been heard from since Thursday morning. He was reported overdue to the Coast Guard Friday evening. An extensive search was conducted around the area he was reported to be fishing, approximately 20 nautical miles off shore. As of Saturday night the Coast Guard completed its search of that area with no sign of Jones.

The cutter is expected to be on-scene at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. This will be the first time the Coast Guard will have surface contact with the boat, all previous contact has been from the air.

Jones departed Morro Bay around 6 a.m. on Thursday, Apr. 3. He was due back that day at 10 a.m.
