MOBILE, Ala. – The oil recovery process is still ongoing along U.S. Highway 90 and the state road 98 causeway, where a crude oil storage container leaked here Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007.
First responders have contained the leak and continue efforts to protect the environment.
As of noon today, 5,400 barrels of oil and contaminated water from cleanup operations have been recovered. No oil is believed to have entered Mobile Bay.
U.S. Highway 90 and the state road 98 causeway, between the Cochran/Africatown Bridge and Bankhead Tunnel, remains closed to thru traffic. However, hazardous cargo shipments are allowed to use this route, as are employees of surrounding businesses.
Drivers of this route are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling.
This incident reinforces the need for all members of the public to be aware of oil spill reporting contact information. To report an oil, chemical, radiological, biological or etiological discharge into the environment anywhere in the United States or its territories, contact the National Response Center (NRC) at 1-800-424-8802.
The cause of the leak is still under investigation.
