Norfolk State and Coast Guard partner in education

NORFOLK, Va. – The Coast Guard and Norfolk State University signed a memorandum of agreement at the NSU L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center Tuesday.

This partnership supports the Coast Guard’s civilian and military officer recruiting efforts while providing academic options to NSU students and faculty.

Under the new agreement, Norfolk State and the Coast Guard will derive the following benefits:

  • NSU students may participate in internships in operations, intelligence studies, community relations, marketing/publicity, and information services among others.
  • NSU students may participate in the Coast Guard’s volunteer service program in which they will work side-by-side with Coast Guard junior officers and civilian personnel.
  • Selected Coast Guard candidates who are full-time Norfolk State students will receive full tuition for as long as two academic years, books and essential supplies, as well as active-duty Coast Guard benefits such as medical, dental and housing allowance.
  • The Coast Guard continues its active support of higher education while strengthening its relationship with Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The agreement will remain in effect for two years and may be renewed after the two-year period.
