New Haven Coast Guard to host open house event

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound will be hosting their free annual ‘Open House’ event Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coast Guard base located at 120 Woodward Ave. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked goods available for sale.

The public is invited to explore a number of Coast Guard search and rescue boats and aids to navigation support vessels. Boats and vehicles from local police and fire departments will also be on site, including the East Haven Fire Department conducting a hose demonstration.

In preparation for National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 18 to May 24, Coast Guard Auxiliary and New Haven Power squadrons will be available to discuss boating safety and paddle smart activities. Environmental organizations, such as the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, will be there to discuss issues that affect Long Island Sound.

The public will be able to ask questions and learn about various Coast Guard missions within the Connecticut and Long Island area. Information will be available to help educate people on how to stay safe on the water during the summer.
