Multiple Coast Guard units respond after sailing regatta is struck by severe weather

D8 LogoThe Coast Guard rescued one person near Dauphin Island at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing with at least four persons still reported missing. Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 4:30 p.m. that a sailing regatta in Mobile Bay was struck by severe weather causing multiple vessels to capsize and leaving multiple people on the water.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile has following assets on scene:

  • 87-foot patrol boat Coast Guard Cutters Stingray and Cobia
  • Four 45-foot response boat – Medium crews from Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island, Pascagoula and Pensacola
  • Two MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
  • An HC-144 Ocean Sentry and HH-60 Jayhawk crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile

Good Samaritans and local authorities have rescued several people from the water.
