Multiple agencies searching for missing kayaker near Milford, Conn.

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard, along with multiple local police departments, are searching for a male kayaker reported missing near Milford, Conn., at about 2 p.m. today.

The man, 28, was reported missing by a friend he was visiting in Milford. He is described as wearing a black sweater, black jeans, a dark gray lifejacket with black trim and using a gray double-seat kayak.

“His friend told us that the missing kayaker left from Milford around 11 a.m.,” said Lt. j.g. Erin Dixon, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s command duty officer. “The kayaker was supposed to take a short trip along the beach and come back. We have conducted several shoreline searches and are expanding our search further offshore.”

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven, local Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crews and members of the Milford, New Haven, West Haven and Branford Police Departments are conducting surface searches.

A rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod is also on scene conducting aerial searches.

Weather on scene is reported as two to three-foot seas, approximately 15 to 20-mile-per-hour winds and a water temperature of 54 degrees.
