7th Coast Guard District News

CHARLESTON, S.C. –Multiple agencies in S.C., are scheduled to partner up to promote boating safety in support of National Safe Boating Week, Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Thomas C. Cario Middle School (3500 Thomas Cairo Boulevard Mount Pleasant).

Attending will be: Coast Guard Sector Charleston, Department of Natural Resources, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston Police Department, North Charleston Police Department and Mount Pleasant, S.C., Police.

The goal is to help educate children on safe boating and water activity practices highlighting the importance of life jackets.

80% of boating fatalities are due to boaters not wearing a life jacket.

This event includes boating safety equipment presentations, static displays and a question and answer session.

As the summer months approach, the Coast Guard is using this opportunity to advise boaters to:

  • Always wear your life jacket
  • Never mix alcohol and boating
  • Check your flares, fire extinguisher and other safety equipment to be certain it is in good condition and up-to-date.
